There's not really any way to use JRuby without Java support, because JRuby itself is written in Java. There are also a few core libraries implemented using Java support. A JRuby without Java binding support would be a bit like C Ruby without extension or Kernel#syscall support. You could, however, take a JRuby distribution and trim out everything you don't need.
