So I did what you said.....

      agent.read_timeout = 10
       begin
         page = agent.get(url)
       rescue Timeout::Error
         puts "Timeout error"
       rescue
         puts "Normal error"
       end


but am still getting the following error. Any idea what might be
causing it?
