BTW, I managed to resolve my speed issues for the C version. My machine
seems to default into "on demand" speed mode, so my runs were starting off
at 1.0GHz before ramping up. With speed scaling off the C version does much
better...though still not as fast as Java:

With IO:
headius@opteron:~/latin_in_c$ time ./latin > /dev/null 2>&1

real    0m0.707s
user    0m0.700s
sys     0m0.004s

Without IO:
headius@opteron:~/latin_in_c$ time ./latin

real    0m0.586s
user    0m0.580s
sys     0m0.004s
