Here is my approach: require 'pathname' p = Pathname.new(File.join('c:', 'ruby', 'samples', 'myfile')) => # puts p.dirname =>c:/ruby/samples puts p.basename => myfile File.join just cancatenates all strings with appropriate path delimiter.
