In a test run I had an 8MB file that had about 80,000 records (obviously, lots of small records). Mongoose did a #find for a particular record, grabbed it, instantiated an object from the Marshaled data, and returned it to me, in something like 0.003 seconds. A little more info on your data would help me give you a more accurate answer.
