Now that I think about it, perhaps it should be something like:

module Kernel
  def getschop!
    $_.chop! if $_ = gets
    $_
  end
end

while getschop!
  puts "#{$_}!"
end

That doesn't error on me, but it also doesn't do the chopping.
hmmmm...
