Then again, at least a generation of C programmers have implemented GCC, Perl, R, Linux, Ruby, etc., so I haven't felt the need. And some of the Lisp and Scheme environments seem to be just as efficient abstract machines as C/GCC. And then there's Forth -- another efficient abstract machine.
