Yup.

Actually, I like to install the whole enchilada into
--prefix=/opt/ruby-1.8.4. For one thing, it makes uninstalling Ruby as
easy as "rm -fr /opt/ruby-1.8.4" (note, Ruby does not currently come
with a "make uninstall").

Anything else after that usually just gets installed via RubyGems.
