Enlightenment (www.enlightenment.org) is a window manager for X that is chiefly famous for exploiting X's graphics capabilities to the limit - fancy non-square themed window decorations, translucent window dragging, and the like. The fact is, both Windows and X are happy to do non-square windows. I don't know that anyone's tried to abstract that capability into a higher-level toolkit though. Are you saying you'd like a platform neutral UI toolkit where the UI description gets sent to the UI server while the application runs on another machine? I.E. instead of X's low level "put a box here, and a circle here..." it's sending "put a checkbox, and then a listbox, and then a button..." The Berlin project had some interesting ideas in this area. I think Berlin has the ability to download widgets to the gfx server. ~Avdi
