Try a netstat -at | grep LISTEN You program isn't hanging - it's looping because the TCPSocket.new call is throwing an exception. In the 'working' case, this exception is being passed to to the top level program, where you're ignoring it an exiting. In the 'hanging' case, it's being ignored in the low level routine, and you're looping calling it. Dave
