 Actually you can write this

pigeon% cat b.rb
#!/usr/bin/ruby
class A
   def initialize a, b = nil
      p b
   end
end

A.new 12, "options1" => 12, "options2" => 24
pigeon% 

pigeon% b.rb
{"options1"=>12, "options2"=>24}
pigeon% 

 In your extension just check if the last argument is a hash
