You can configure ActiveRecord to a certain extent.  It sounds like  
you might want to investigate it more before saying "you have to".   
You could also use rails w/o ActiveRecord if you really wanted to.

I think you're wrong here.  I'm seeing stuff in the rails wiki for  
Oracle, SQL server, Sybase...

"Fast enough" seems to be the going mantra.
