I'm not a real Windows person either, but on NT and 2000 there is a utility in
the Resource Kit (which you may or may not have; I don't know what is shipped
standard with NT-based systems) called SRVANY.exe that allows you to run any
executable as a service.  If you have the Resource Kit, its online help should
tell you how to use SRVANY.
