By default this is set to /usr/local, and compiled files end up in places like /usr/local/bin, /usr/local/lib You can explicitly set the prefix to some other place by running configure with the --prefix=some/other/place: ./configure --prefix=/$HOME This will create a makefile that is setup to install the compiled code bin and lib directories of your home directory. Then you run make make test make install and you should be good.
