Here is a naive implementation:

class String
  def words
    scan(/\b\S+\b/) 
  end 
end

'this is a sentence with some words'.words
=> ["this", "is", "a", "sentence", "with", "some", "words"]
'this is a sentence with some words'.words.size
=> 7
