There really isn't anything to it, I compiled ruby without any sort of error the first time, the other three were just experiments - like adding -pthread to the configure script so ruby will be compiled using the reentrant libc_r instead of libc (a very recent OpenBSD thing, in the current sources) - which works, and trying to use -O3 instead of -O2 - which doesn't work. The final configure I used had the --with-static-linked-ext flag and -pthread, with all the extensions, and thus far I have experienced no problems with it.
