On the other hand, if this is something we'd like to investigate as a
possibility, now would be a _great_ time to be talking. That way if
there are features we need, we'd have the ability to suggest changes
before the design becomes fixed.

I see merit in coming up with shared underlying abstraction layers
(network, threading and the like). I'm less sure about having a
universal virtual machine.
