If you use this definition instead:

class Symbol
   def to_proc()
     lambda { |obj, *args| obj.send(self, *args) }
   end
end

You can also do this:

(1 .. 5).inject(&:+) # => 15
(1 .. 5).inject(&:*) # => 120
