Reason: an HPUX process that wants to use libraries compiled as multithreaded (case in hand: the Oracle DB driver), must be compiled as multithreaded itself. Unfortunately, Ruby didn't work when compiled in multi-threaded mode on HP-UX. It did compile fine and dandy without libpthread, but then I couldn't use it for half the tasks I needed it to perform.
