This thread is a testament to why I wrote the getopt package:

# test.rb
require 'getopt/long'
include Getopt

opts = Long.getopts(['--size', '-s', REQUIRED])
p opts['size']

C:\ruby test.rb -s 'Very Big'
"Very Big"

C:\

gem install getopt :)
