Oops, the above, leaves the cmd shell open, this is better:
l_cmd = "devenv my_solution.sln /rebuild 'release Win32'"
IO.popen("cmd.exe /c #{l_cmd}") do | pipe |
      pipe.each_line { |line| puts line }
end
