 I almost squeezed out as much from this direction.

   (n=$*[0].to_i).times{|i|puts"#{'#'*(n-2*(n/2-i).abs)}".center n}

 this is longer but has nicer symmetry

n=$*[0].to_i;(i=n%2).upto(n){|j|puts"#{'#'*i}".center n;i+=(2*j>=n)?-2:2}
