My apologies:  my return codes are actually there, as you more seasoned fellows
undoubtedly knew.  Apparently they get interpreted fine by vim, but I still
when I use them to add to a string in ruby where another segment added to the
string has normal linefeeds for end of lines, then the string segment with CRs
gets lfs added and suddenly all the CRs show up.  It is an interesting behavior,
but not something I was able to pull up from the searches.  I'm afraid I need
to hone my searching skills generally for both Google and otherwise.  

Again, suggestions and comments are welcome, and you are of course welcome to
make this foolishness public, as others may want to know of the behavior.
