I'd *rather* do this sort of work in Ruby, but reality says that not every hosting environment will have Ruby, and I'll rarely have the ultimate say over this. So I need to construct scripting components in some more available language, such as PHP3, so that there is a t least a minimal set of objects that can be installed most places. However, I would like to plan for the ability to have different objects written in different languages play well with each other. PHP, Ruby, Perl, will let me call other scripts using system calls, but this strikes me as really inefficient. I've been thinking that an XML-RPC interface would be nice, though I don't know that it would grant much in performance. Still, I like the idea of having a relatively easy way of putting up a language-agnostic interface into my components. Knowing that this is a core part of Ruby might make it more attractive for those folks who want (or need) to ease into it, gradually merging Ruby objects with other languages. Likewise, I like the idea of being able to write an application in Ruby, but snarfing modules from Perl for things not yet available in Ruby. (Beginning to sound like Ruby.NET ...)
