fetch() has the requested behaviour, but [] is nicer, syntactically.

a.fetch(2).fetch(3) # safe
a[2][3]             # nice

with delegate I can have both!

class SafeArray < DelegateClass(Array)
  def [](index)
    fetch index
  end
end
