Do you set "$VERBOSE = true"?  My problem was that "$VERBOSE = true ;
require yaml" spewed a lot of warnings in 1.8.3 .  It didn't break
anything but the noise was very annoying.  If you don't set "$VERBOSE
= true" then probably 1.8.3 is fine.
