Here's another idea you may or may not like.

The id# may be annoying in the newsgroup at the front of the
subject, but what if you embedded it as the first line of the
body?

In my mind, this would serve these purposes:
  1. To identify messages that originated on the ML;
  2. To verify that no ML messages are missing; and
  3. To allow newsgroup users, if they wish, to reference
       the ML numbers

Just a thought.
