Your clue is the last part of the error. It appears as if the OpenSSL
library has generated a SIGABRT. Try this:

require 'encrypt'
trap( "ABRT") { puts "abort trapped... dumping out" }
encrypt( 'test')
encrypt( '')

See if that works.
