Haven't followed this thread, but Apple has a broken Ruby.

Get the Ruby source, compile it yourself, install it into /usr/local,
and be happy with Ruby on OS X.

tar zxf ruby-1.8.2.tar.gz
cd ruby-1.8.2
./configure --prefix=/usr/local
make
sudo make install

And adjust your path so that /usr/local/bin is before /usr/bin.
