This works for me:

  :!ruby %

BTW, you can check syntax with:

  :!ruby -c %

> open an irb session from the editing environment.  i'm running cream/gvim 6.3 

  :!irb

> on windows.

My suggestions work on FreeBSD and Linux.  Don't know about
Windows.
