In `96 Java was also liked for it's productivity and hated for it's poor performance. LISP and Smaltalk failed because of poor performance and being revolutionary. But I think it was poor performance most of all. Nowadays LISP is as fast as C++, but who cares ? It wasn't fast enough when it was needed and now people consider it weird and ... slow. Anyway, I was trying to say that I really hope Yarv delivers.
