In class based languages like C++ and Ruby it is a technique (or  
pattern). In delegate/prototype based languages (like self and  
JavaScript) it is the mechanism used to implement inheritance.

You should be able to find some good examples in Ruby by googling  
around a bit. One thing to read would be the Pragmatic Programmers
