there are some advantages in using a general purpose editor. I don't
like emacs/vi either because to be really efficient in emacs one needs
to learn elisp, and vi is trully hard to learn.

But there are other usefull editors like Eclipse / jEdit. The RDE
plugin for Eclipse is far from being complete, but it has very good
potential (if only people started using it).
I also love SciTE for fast editing.
