Here is how I just did it:

get ftp://ftp.ruby-lang.org/pub/ruby/snapshot.tar.gz (when I got it, it  
was from 2005.08.13 19:00:00)
and http://www.atdot.net/yarv/yarv-0.2.3.tar.gz

0.2.3 is not on the website but I found it here:  
http://www.atdot.net/svn/yarv/trunk/Changes

Then just follow the instructions:

ruby:
patch < ../yarv-0.2.3/evalc.patch
(autoconf)
./configure
make
(make test)
make install

yarv:
ruby extconf.rb
make
(make benchmark)
(make install)

This all worked without problems.
