What is the result of the following command in the terminal? echo $PATH Make sure your path contains /usr/local/bin. You could also try to call rails with its full path. depending on where you install things it should be in one of 2 places: either /usr/bin/rails or /usr/local/ bin/rails Check out both of those places and see where the rails command is actually located and then make sure that it is in you $PATH by adding it to your ~/.bashrc or equivalent file.
