Aha!  That explains it all...  So then:

  puts ([1..10] == 1..10 ? "true" : "false")

returns "false" - a complicated way to say 1..10 and [1..10] are not
the same thing :-)

So, in my original programming, what I wanted was not "[1..10]" but
"(1..10)".  It all makes sense now.
