this might be helpful:

     #
     # returns true if pid is running, false otherwise
     #
       def alive pid
#--{{{
         pid = Integer("#{ pid }")
         begin
           Process::kill 0, pid
           true
         rescue Errno::ESRCH
           false
         end
#--}}}
       end
       alias alive? alive
