Actually,

    The Kinglet isn't that bad of a mascot the more I look at it.  But one 
animal that I've not seen proposed before that seems perhaps appropriate is a 
tanuki.  It's japanese racoon-like animal.  And it can be drawn in a cute 
fashion perhaps cuddling up with a ruby gem or something.  It's something 
that can be made to look cute, has a Japanese flavor to it.
