You could assign a new input method to IRB.CurrentContext.io:
IRB.CurrentContext.io = IRB::StdioInputMethod.new

Write a short-named method that toggles the input method between
IRB::StdioInputMethod and IRB::ReadlineInputMethod, and you can
quickly switch between the two modes.
