It would be hard to choose code which doesn't benifit a language too
much, yet still shows the strengths of each one. 

The code which got implemented in most languages is probably the one
printing 'Hello World'. You find examples for a lot languages on
http://www.latech.edu/~acm/HelloWorld.shtml (not including ruby yet)
or http://c2.com/cgi-bin/wiki?HelloWorld (less, but including ruby).
