I do 95% of my code editing in vim. FWIW, the workflow I've converged on here at work (~1M lines of visual c++, though, as you say, seldom working on more than 5-10 files at any given time) is gvim for editing, glark for searching and visual studio for symbol lookup (better than ctags for its own projects) and compiling (it lets you jump to errors). martin
