I don't object to the 'for' (although I know some don't like it).

FWIW I'll offer this (untested) alternative:

  <table>
    <tr><th>Songs</th></tr>
    <% unless song_list.each do |song|%>
      <tr><td><%= song.name %></td></tr>
      <% end.empty? %>
      <tr><td>no songs!</td></tr>
    <% end %>
    </tr>
  </table>
