Couple of books on Ruby in Japanese and English have been published, however, I have not seen any book which is suitable for newcomers to programming. I strongly feel that there are big gaps between enthusiastic Windows users and Linux users. I assume there are different kinds of gaps between them. Linux users may not find programming difficult compared to Windows-only users. I started using AWK six years ago and found very basic explanations in the books on AWK assumed that the readers knew basic UNIX command. Do anybody recommend books or online sources which explain basic UNIX commands for Windows users in order to understand and enjoy _Programming Ruby_ by Thomas and Hunt (2000)? By the way, could I ask you how many of you are in the field of phonetics and linguistics? Thank you for your time. Yoshinari Fujino y.fujino@ucl.ac.uk www.geocities.co.jp/CollegeLife-Labo/9551/
