Well, here, this will make you feel better!  Since, as you commented,
you are teaching yourself to program, and, since, Dave didn't mention
it, I'll recommend Dave and Andrew's first book to you: "The Pragmatic
Programmer" (http://www.pragmaticprogrammer.com/ppbook/index.shtml).  It
contains bunches of great practices and ways to refine your craft as a
developer.  I wish I'd been able to read this when I started way back in
'83.  There's alot of stuff in it I learned the hard way, and more that
I'd not thought of yet (having read it last year).  Highly recommended.
