probably mixins using #extend :
 >> a=Class.new
=> #<Class:0x2be5788>
 >> module M; def foo() 'yuk' end; end
=> nil
 >> a.extend M
=> #<Class:0x2be5788>
 >> a.foo
=> "yuk"
