I think it is - a bug in zsh.

start with bash:

[ensemble] ~/p/ruby/zeroconf $ ruby -e 'print "hello"'      
hello[ensemble] ~/p/ruby/zeroconf $ zsh
ensemble% ruby -e 'printf "hello"'
ensemble% 


I think zsh is wrong here..
