Libraries have never magically *disappeared* for me because a
packaging/installation tool  put them in a place the runtime doesn't
look for them. Until gems.

Did you completely miss the point of Jim's claim, that you don't have to
do anything special in your code to use a gem?

That you have an amazing personal setup allowing you to get RUBYOPT
defined everywhere is hardly the point - that you have to do the setup
after deciding to use gems (or use one of the other two solutions) is
the point.
