\n will only be converted it you allow string expansion,

#a bunch of blank lines
x = <<"ENDTEXT"
\n\n\n\n\n
ENDTEXT

#a bunch of literal \n 's
x = <<'ENDTEXT'
\n\n\n\n\n
ENDTEXT

Note the double-quotes compared to the single quotes.
