Police are not allowed to interrogate a suspect once he asserts his right to
remain silent, *and* they're required to inform him of that right before
questioning him. If the suspect decides to talk anyway, then yes, police are
allowed to lie during questioning in an attempt to gain a confession (for
example, saying that they have a witness to the crime when they have none,
or that the suspect's accomplice has confessed even if he hasn't).
