Thank you for all your help. Here is the process for future reference.

Open Terminal, type "vi ~/.profile" without quotes

Type "i" to tell vi to insert at beginning of file

type "export PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH"

Hit esc to switch to command mode, type ":wq" to save and quit
